When something is wrong

Sorted by what you can see, because when something is broken you know the symptom and not the cause. Each page says what it usually is, what it occasionally is, and what to do in which order.

Two checks that split almost everything

Before reading any specific page, these take about thirty seconds together and separate most of the categories below.

  1. Build a new circuit, then try a different address. If one address fails and another works, the problem is that address rather than your setup or the market.
  2. Open any unrelated onion service. If that also fails it is the network, and nothing address specific will help. If it works, the problem is narrower.

One rule that applies to all eight

Do not go looking for a new address while something is broken. Anything that surfaces during an outage was placed there for people in exactly that situation, and the timing is not a coincidence. Whatever is unreachable will come back, and waiting costs nothing except patience.
